The problem
A bill tells you the total, after the fact.
An electricity bill arrives once the billing cycle is over, as a single number. It doesn't show how usage built up during the cycle, or where the current one is heading.
- Readings are easy to jot down and easy to lose track of
- Usage inside a billing cycle stays invisible until the bill arrives
- A charge is hard to estimate from a meter reading alone
